Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, Jonny Morris, CEO of CMHA BC Division shares the following:
Today is an opportunity to come together, remember, reflect, raise awareness, reduce stigma, share stories of hope, and strengthen our commitment to do whatever we can to support people contemplating suicide to have more liveable lives. Today, I remember those who have died by suicide.
I am grateful for the work of care providers and community organizations across the province, including life-saving organizations like crisis lines, all supporting people experiencing thoughts of suicide and the bereaved, hearing their stories, providing support, compassion, and kindness. And I am grateful that suicide prevention is starting to become a stronger priority for governments here in BC and nationally.
Reaching out and talking to someone can literally be lifesaving; it’s so important for people to know they’re not alone and help is available.
If you are concerned about someone, please reach out to them now. I encourage you to reach out, have courageous conversations, and let people know you care.
Resources in BC include:
- 911 in an emergency
- 1-800-SUICIDE for crisis support anytime
- 310-6789 (no area code) for emotional support or information in BC
