Statement from CMHA BC CEO sharing condolences and resources in this time of grief
On behalf of the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division, I want to express how shocked and deeply saddened we all are by the tragic loss of life that occurred at Vancouver’s Filipino Lapu Lapu Day Block Party. The loss of eleven lives and injuries to many others has shaken our entire community to its core.
To our Filipino friends, colleagues, and community members: we stand with you in solidarity during this unimaginable time of grief. What should have been a joyous celebration of Filipino culture and heritage ended in devastating loss, and we join you in mourning those whose lives were taken so senselessly.
I’ve connected with our team across Division and Branches, and we’re offering support and care to any of our team members affected by this tragedy. No one should face this alone, and we’re here for you.
In these early moments following such a devastating incident, we must be cautious about drawing conclusions regarding mental illness and violence. We must remember that most people with mental health challenges are never violent and are in fact more likely to be victims of violence. It’s important we focus on supporting those affected while avoiding reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who were killed. To those who were injured and those who witnessed this tragedy, please know that support is available through several resources:
Victim Services: 1-800-563-0808 or 211-victimlinkbc@uwbc.ca

And given the Code Orange declared at Vancouver hospitals last night, consider donating blood if you can.
We remain committed to supporting the Filipino community and others during this difficult time and will continue to look for ways to help in the healing process ahead.
