CMHA BC is dedicated to supporting Suicide Prevention & Life Promotion across the Province. It’s important to get help if you or someone you know is going through a crisis or thinking about suicide. You’re not alone.
Suicide Prevention Initiative by CMHA BC
In September 2022, the Government of BC announced its commitment to facilitate a system-wide transformation in how suicide risk and care are addressed and managed. The Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions has invested $2 million to improve the quality of care provided to individuals experiencing mental health crises, thoughts of suicide, and/or suicide attempts.
This investment will be stewarded by CMHA BC, to convene and collaborate with regional health authorities to support these efforts.
“This significant investment demonstrates a commitment to improving quality in care for people in crisis,” said Jonny Morris, CEO, CMHA BC. “Health-care settings, like the emergency department, offer important opportunities to prevent suicide. CMHA BC is looking forward to continuing our ongoing partnership alongside people with lived experience, health authorities and the Province to transform crisis care for the better.”

Improving Suicide Care in BC: A Dialogue with People with Lived and Living Experience
Ensuring thoughtful partner engagement is crucial to the success of the Suicide Care Initiative. As part of this engagement, CMHA BC hosted a first of its kind event, “Improving Suicide Care in BC: A Dialogue with People with Lived and Living Experience.”
Through this event, a report was developed summarizing the key themes, recommendations, and calls to action. Download the report to learn more.
Campus Suicide Prevention
In 2020, CMHA BC, in partnership with BC’s Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions (MMHA), invited proposals from publicly-funded post-secondary institutions in BC to engage in campus suicide prevention initiatives.
The intent of this project was to assist post-secondary institutions in developing and implementing new or expanded campus suicide prevention frameworks and supporting rollout through the Healthy Minds| Healthy Campuses (HM|HC) community-of-practice network. HM|HC provided on-demand technical assistance to support these initiatives throughout the duration of the grant project.
