Speaker Bios
Jessy Neal
Jessy is a Cree and Métis (and Heinz-57) woman who grew up in BC’s Cariboo region. She is a program coordinator with the Federation of BC Youth in Care. She is completing her master’s degree in social work. A former youth in care herself, Jessy and her husband are currently taking care of her young nephew.
Meenakshi Mannoe
Meenakshi Mannoe is the Criminalization & Policing Campaigner for Pivot Legal Society. Meenakshi is a settler living on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples since 2006. This relationship to the host nations and Indigenous people across so-called Canada demands accountability and interrogations of social justice work and praxis. In her role at Pivot, Meenakshi works alongside her interdisciplinary colleagues to envision intersectional approaches to policing and criminalization. She values Pivot’s uncompromising commitment to the expertise and vision of people with lived and living experience. Her work emphasizes the impact of policing on all aspects of Pivot’s work, with particular attention to public legal education materials, policy analysis, community engagement, and coordinating speaking engagements.
Bernard Piprah, MA, RCC
Bernard (he/him) is an experienced, clinical-based mental health provider and Registered Clinical Counsellor (R.C.C.) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. Born in Vancouver, BC to Jamaican and Ghanian immigrants, Bernard has spent the last 8+ years working with Fraser Health Authority providing counselling and psychoeducation to individuals struggling with a wide range of mental health challenges. Bernard utilizes an eclectic approach to support clients in-person & virtually, inviting clients of all ages and backgrounds to recognize their capacity for resiliency. A client centered, trauma-informed treatment process is how Bernard generates awareness, insight, a sense of control and/or radical acceptance of the most challenging circumstances faced with his clients. His primary therapeutic approaches include: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Attachment Informed Modalities.
